Electric vs Water Underfloor Heating

It’s a common misconception that electric underfloor heating is more expensive than water-based systems. In reality, when controlled properly, electric heating is highly efficient.

Loose wire systems offer better floor coverage compared to heat mats, making them ideal for awkward or irregular-shaped areas.

Electric systems use a floor sensor rather than an air sensor, making them more responsive and efficient than water-based heating.

They heat from the floor up to around 6 feet, avoiding wasted energy at ceiling level. Plus, there’s no need for bulky radiators, helping to free up wall space.

Electric underfloor heating can act as your primary heat source or be used for comfort heating—ideal for keeping floors warm in bathrooms, kitchens, or living areas.

Installing Loose Wire 200W/m²

Roma’s Loose Wire System can be installed directly on stable wood, screed, or concrete subfloors. For improved performance, we recommend using insulation boards, such as:

• Cement-coated Tile Backer Boards
• XPS Insulation Boards

Insulation is especially important in older properties and on concrete floors to reduce downward heat loss and improve heat-up times.

After laying the cables, embed them in a self-levelling compound or flexible tile adhesive before fitting your final floor covering.
