Time To Get Rid Of The Radiators

Eliminates The Need For Unsightly Radiators

Installing electric underfloor heating eliminates the need for bulky, unsightly radiators, providing a luxurious warmth that enhances any room and floor.

If you’re planning to renovate or replace your existing floor tiles, installing electric heating is definitely worth considering.

This article will provide you with all the information you need to know.

First thing to do is measure the width and length of the room. Unlike loose cables, it is not recommended to heat wall-to-wall with 150w or 200w heat mats.

What Mat Size Should I Purchase?

It’s important to cover at least 80% of the floor for effective heating—the more coverage, the faster and more efficient the warmth.

As an example, we have a square conservatory measuring 4.2m by 4.2m, totalling 17.6 sqm. Since no other heating will be installed, the recommended option is the 200W system as the primary heat source.

Covering 100% with a mat is usually not possible; only loose cables can achieve full coverage.

When using electric heating as primary heat, always install insulation boards beneath the heat mats or cables.

Heat mats are limited by the number of 0.5m runs and turns possible.

This room would suit 16 sqm (4m x 4m) of UFH, leaving a 100mm unheated border and over 90% floor coverage.

Not all rooms allow this, though. For irregular or smaller rooms (like bathrooms), loose cables are often better, as they enable 100% floor coverage.

Installation Of The Underfloor Heating

Electric heating is easy to install under tiles and can be done by competent DIYers, tilers, or trade professionals.

For best efficiency and lower running costs, the heat mat should be laid directly on XPS or Tile Backer insulation.

After installing insulation, the heat mat is rolled out near the edge of the room.

The mesh backing is cut to turn and cover the desired area.

The mat should be rolled away from the thermostat position, keeping the cold tail connection close to where it will be installed.

For larger areas, multiple mats can be installed. Controlling bigger areas from a single thermostat may require a 25amp or 40amp relay.

The Benefits of Heating Under Tiles

Few things are worse than stepping onto a freezing cold floor during winter. Even with radiators, a cold floor can feel uncomfortable.

Electric underfloor heating solves this by warming the floor first, then radiating heat upward. It can be used on its own or alongside other heating systems, offering flexible comfort in any room.

Electric heating is generally cheaper to buy and install than water-based systems. That’s why it’s a popular choice for retrofits, DIYers, and trade professionals alike.

Thanks to its simple design, installation is straightforward. The only requirement is that a qualified electrician signs off the connection to the thermostat.

When installed correctly with the recommended products, both heat mats and loose wire systems under tiles come with a Lifetime Guarantee.

They’re often seen as more reliable and easier to install than water-based underfloor heating systems.

Is Electric Heating Expensive To Run?

A common misconception is that electric heating is costly to run. In fact, electric heating is initially much cheaper to purchase than water-based underfloor heating.

Of course, if you set it to excessively high temperatures and leave it on for long periods, running costs will increase. However, electric heating isn’t designed to be used this way—it’s very efficient when controlled properly.

Electric heating is generally very responsive. It reaches set temperatures much faster than radiators or water-based underfloor heating. This means it typically runs for shorter periods, saving energy.

With rising gas prices and the move toward electric and solar power, electric heating is becoming the future of home heating and is growing in popularity every day.
